Incontinence after childbirth… a hush, hush problem

Like many women, I was so excited about being pregnant with my daughter. My husband and I had planned the pregnancy for a long time and when I did the PIS test (pee in a stick) and it came out positive, I was overwhelmed with the happiness. During the 39 weeks that my pregnancy lasted, I was the happiest woman on earth.

I had what I  think is the best ObGyn. So much so, that I drive 2 1/2 to 3 hours for my annual test because he’s been my doctor for many years and he took really good care of me during my pregnancy. He was on top of my health and told me to walk everyday, to do yoga, to be active and watch my diet.

After I gave birth to my daughter (even though the delivery was easy for me) I found myself with a bit of a problem: incontinence. I worried that it would never go away and as I met other moms, I realized that it’s a “hush, hush” type of problem that many women don’t speak of openly because most of us are embarrassed to talk about it. I finally had the guts to talk to my doctor about it and once again he said to exercise of course you’d think that I would have listened to my doctor and do as he stated, but it was hard with a newborn baby and a load of financial problems thanks to the economy. This was 2007.

In 2009 we moved to North Santa Barbara County and I love, really love the small town we moved to, away from the business of Los Angeles. Besides packing our furniture, toys and clothes, I realized that I had also moved with my problem, the incontinence. Yep, here I was in a new town a year and a half after my daughter’s birth and the problem was STILL there. Quite honestly, although my doctor had stated the importance of working out and I had worked out, the exercises I had been doing were not sufficient to strengthen my pelvic muscles, so the problem persisted. After our move, I completely stopped working out, gained more weight and the problem was still there, although it had not gotten worse (thank goodness for that!).

Finally sick of my appearance I decided to buy the P90X and as you can tell by my blog, I have completed the 90 days of the program. Today I woke up and I realized something… the incontinence is completely gone. The funny thing is that it has been gone for a while now and I had not even noticed it. The only thing that is different from last year is the P90X. After all those AbRipper exercises and the Core Synergestics DVD my pelvic muscles have actually healed completely.

If this is a problem that is facing you, I recommend doing what my doctor recommended and exercise. Although the P90X may not be your cup of tea, there are other programs offered by Beachbody, the makers of the P90X that may be more suitable for you.
